Developing your WHY for health and fitness

You’ve tried to lose weight or get in better shape before but you’ve never been able to keep the weight off or accomplish your fitness goal? Does that sound like you? What if I could tell you that this time it will be different? All we need to do is develop your WHY.

I read a book recently and in that book they talked about developing a strong WHY to be successful. They described it this way. If someone were to place a 6” wide plank that is 30’ long on the floor and offer you $20 to walk from one end to the other would you do it? It is safe to say that everyone would walk across the plank. Now take the same plank and place it between 2 buildings, 100 feet off of the ground, would you still cross it for $20? Probably none of us would. Now don’t change anything except, instead of $20, the other building is on fire and one of your loved ones is over there. The only way to save them is to cross over on that plank and help them out of the other building. You would probably now run across that plank. The plank and it being suspended at 100’ never changed. The only thing that changed was your WHY. Your WHY suddenly became strong enough to overcome your fear.

We need to develop that same sort of strong WHY when it comes to your weight loss and fitness. When I ask people why they want to lose weight or get fit they often tell me things like, “I want to look good for a certain event coming up.” That event might be a wedding, a class reunion, a child’s graduation, a vacation, a meeting with an ex-spouse, etc. I also get lots of physical responses, “I want to feel better”, “I want to feel less tired”, etc. What I’m going to tell you is that these are mostly what I’ll classify as REASONS people want to lose weight. Most times, if I keep asking WHY after I get a reason I’ll eventually get to a strong WHY. It takes a strong WHY to be successful at anything in life but especially fitness and weight loss. This isn’t going to be easy, it is going to take work, and if all you have is a reason to do this…well you might get to where you want to be but then you’ll not have that WHY to keep motivating you and you’ll wind up back where you started. A strong WHY needs to be an emotional WHY.

It needs to be something that when you think about it you’ll feel the tears well up in your eyes.

The strong whys are things like, “because I want to be able to go outside and play with my kids”, “because I want to live long enough to see my kids/grandkids grow up”,  “because I want to live to see my next birthday”, etc.

So keep asking yourself WHY you want to work on your fitness now and don’t stop asking till you develop that strong WHY. After you find your strong WHY write it down and post it somewhere you will see it often. Then contact me and share your WHY with me and let me help you achieve your fitness goals. This is about changing your lifestyle and helping you get healthy! If you need some inspiration check out some of our success stories on our home page. You can do this and I’m here to help!
